Training Opportunities

The BHWC offers a variety of training opportunities at no cost to Illinois Behavioral Health providers. Trainings are organized by topic in the tabs below. Select the tab for training details and the link to enroll. Courses that offer CEUs are noted in the description.

Knowing Yourself as a Supervisor is the first of three courses in the Supervision training series. This self-paced course introduces learners to the role and responsibilities of the supervisor, identifies leadership styles, explores how cultural humility affects supervision and provides guidelines for how to structure and plan for supervision. *This course awards 1.0 CEU.

Providing Feedback and Addressing Conflict in Supervision is the second of three training courses in the Supervision training series. This self-paced course outlines effective approaches for delivering feedback, identifies essential conflict management skills and provides guidelines on how to recognize and respond to transference and countertransference in supervisees. *This course awards 1.0 CEU.

Guiding Principles is the third of three trainings in the Supervision training series. This self-paced course explores ethical considerations such as examining dual relationships, maintaining boundaries and ethical decision making. Learners will practice applying strategies to balance ethical responsibility and self-determination in supervision and be able to describe the importance of seeking consultation and support. *This course awards 1.0 CEU.

The Motivational Interviewing with People in Mental Health Recovery Using a Stages of Change Decision Aid interactive asynchronous training covers the stages of change paradigm and basics of motivational interviewing, including use of open questions, affirmations, reflections, and summaries. Users learn how to recognize what stages clients are in and use a motivational interviewing decision tool to select appropriate strategies based on the person’s readiness for change. As they practice using motivational interviewing skills, providers receive suggestions for incorporating new learning into their ongoing clinical work. *This course awards 1.0 CEU.

The Partnering with Clients to Promote Medication Adherence interactive asynchronous training teaches providers how to support clients’ decisions about taking medication by using shared decision-making and motivational interviewing strategies. Users learn common reasons for non-adherence and specific ways to address them. They practice using tested approaches to supporting adherence with immediate feedback based on examples from actual clients’ lives. *This course awards 1.0 CEU.

The Using Motivational Interviewing for Recovery Support interactive asynchronous training shows CRSS and CPRS staff how to use motivational interviewing strategies in their work while remaining true to the principles of peer support and self-help. Learners practice using a Decision Aid for motivational interviewing in real-life peer support situations and receive immediate feedback to help them refine newly acquired skills. *This course awards 1.0 CEU.

The Enhancing Clients’ Physical Health & Wellness through Shared Decision-Making interactive asynchronous training teaches providers how to initiate discussions with clients about enhancing their physical health with a focus on activating healthy lifestyle routines and using primary care and preventive services. Users learn how to apply an evidence-based shared decision-making tool to help clients make important health care decisions. Also covered are ways to support clients before and after visits to their doctor. *This course awards 1.0 CEU.

The Diabetes Education & Online Toolkit for Providers interactive asynchronous training covers the basics of diabetes and shows providers how to use an award-winning online toolkit to provide diabetes education to clients with co-occurring diabetes and mental health disorders. Learners practice using the toolkit to learn about diabetes standards of care and understand results of diabetes-related lab tests and physical exams. *This course awards 1.0 CEU.

The Healthy Eating & Physical Activity Skill Sets for Clients interactive asynchronous training prepares front-line providers to teach clients skills in 4 areas shown to impact body weight, general health, and well-being. Skill sets include:

1. How to use information from food labels to choose healthy foods they enjoy
2. Ways to motivate clients to increase their levels of physical activity safely
3. Shopping for nutritious foods and preparing healthy meals on a limited budget
4. Understanding and adopting healthy eating strategies and portion sizes

Evidence-based materials for each skill set include a handout for providers instructing them what to say and do, with a corresponding handout for clients. *This course awards 1.0 CEU.

Woman who looks like a professional therapist sits with a smile on her face while talking to a client with their back to the camera.In an effort to improve access to behavioral health services, the BHWC is providing an Integrated Behavioral Health for Primary Care Providers ECHO program to improve the management of patients with health conditions. The monthly Integrated Behavioral Health ECHO sessions will begin on September 11, 2024, and conclude on June 9, 2025, with sessions held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month from Noon to 1pm.

Each session will consist of a 15-20-minute didactic presentation and a case presentation with discussion. The program will feature topics such as nuances of psychiatric history, education of psychiatric diagnoses, medications, and treatments, mental illnesses and many more.

The Behavioral Health Workforce Center of Illinois (BHWC) invites you to join their Telehealth for Behavioral Health Providers ECHO program. The program is provided in an effort to increase access to telehealth services for Behavioral Health Providers, and enhance knowledge on telehealth services. The BHWC Telehealth ECHO program will take place monthly starting September 9, 2024, through June 11, 2025, with sessions on the 2nd Monday of each month from Noon to 1pm.

During each session, participants will be able to experience a short didactic presentation and participate in a case presentation and discussion. Throughout the program, topics such as Introduction to Telehealth, Health Equality and Accessibility, Best Practices and many more will be presented.

Do you provide mental health services to children and early teens with Medicaid insurance? Do you supervise at least one other clinician or intern? If so, receive free training and support to increase your skill and satisfaction with your practice and improve client outcomes!

The Illinois Behavioral Health Workforce Center is hosting free training on using PracticeWise MATCH, an online treatment manual for mental health needs of children and early teens with Medicaid insurance.

Who should participate?

The training is available to mental health providers who supervise at least one intern or staff member and have a caseload that includes children or early teens.

What are the benefits?

  • You will receive 1-1.5 CEUs for each learning collaborative you attend.
  • There is a stipend provided to agencies if staff complete all sessions, and is limited to one stipend per agency.
  • Clinicians who learn and use MATCH are more satisfied with the intervention than either other evidence-based treatment manuals or treatment as usual without using manuals.
  • Clients treated using MATCH also experience significantly more reduction in symptoms than with use of other approaches.
